Guy was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1990 and worked in private practice (insurance defence and employment litigation). In 1997, he became an in-house counsel at Unum Life Insurance Company of America. Unum later merged with Provident/Paul Revere, which was later taken over by RBC Life when it purchased the Canadian block of UnumProvident's business in 2004.
At RBC Insurance, he manages the Disputes Resolution legal team of 3 lawyers and 3 law clerks which is responsible for the defence of all types of litigation against any of the RBC Insurance entities, including primarily disability, life and living benefits coverages.
Guy has long been a strong supporter of the CLHIA and believed in its importance to the industry and making us all better at the jobs we do. He has held a number of roles in furtherance of that belief:
-Chair of the 2020-2021 Legal Section Executive Committee;
-past Chair of the Working Group on Litigation Matters;
-Chair of the ad-hoc committee of industry in-house counsel convened for the purpose of retaining and instructing counsel with respect to the intervention by CLHIA in the successful insurer appeal in the seminal Gibbens v. Cooperators Life case at the Supreme Court of Canada.
