Speaker biography
The Honourable Dennis O’Connor, O.C., OOnt, K.C., sat on the Court of Appeal for Ontario from 1998 to 2012 and served as the Associate Chief Justice of Ontario from 2001 until he retired in late 2012.
He wrote numerous reported judgments on a wide variety of issues, including commercial, securities, criminal and insurance law. He also conducted two public inquiries: the Walkerton Inquiry (2000-2002) and the Maher Arar Inquiry (2004-2006).
Dennis was appointed as an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2016 and to the Order of Ontario in 2017. He has received a number of awards including six honorary doctorates.
After his retirement from the Bench in 2013, Dennis joined Borden Ladner Gervais as Senior Counsel. He is also Chair of Pro Bono Canada and sits on the board of directors of Innocence Canada.
