Sonya joined the Canada Revenue Agency Industry Services Specialist (ISS) team in 2024. She is one of two Insurance Industry Specialist in the Compliance Programs Branch. In this role she is responsible for providing technical assistance, including training and knowledge transfer to CRA field auditors as well as establishing national assessing positions to ensure consistency within the industry. Additionally she is responsible for co-ordinating insurance taxation issues with both internal stakeholders (Appeals, Department of Justice, Department of Finance) and external stakeholders (CLHIA, IBC, CALU).
Sonya is a CPA and holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from Wilfrid Laurier University. She has been with CRA since 2000, in the large business section since 2008. Sonya spent 12 years in business audit of several insurance companies , both life and property and casualty. She left audit to be a Manager for the National Estates and Trusts team at CRA, and returned to insurance as an insurance specialist in the Appeals Division at CRA before moving back to Compliance Program with the current ISS role.
