Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPN) play a vital role in Canada’s mental healthcare system. The practice of RPNs is the application of registered psychiatric nursing skill, knowledge, and judgment with a focus on mental health, addictions, and neurodevelopmental disorders. The pandemic has increased the demand for mental health providers across the country and RPNs are uniquely equipped to meet this demand. We will review regulations for independent practice and discuss the need for professional recognition from an insurance perspective.
