Speaker biography
Ellen K. Embury is one of Canada’s leading practitioners in the area of surrogacy and fertility law. She has been practicing as a surrogacy and fertility specialist in Canada for over 20 years.

She has helped thousands of couples and individuals of all backgrounds and sexual orientations to become parents. She works with intended parents, surrogates (gestational carriers), egg and sperm donors and also with physicians and clinics across Canada, the United States and more recently Mexico and South America.

Surrogacy agencies from across Canada and internationally refer their clients to Ellen for assistance with surrogacy legal services in Alberta and Canada.

Ellen has been a Fellow of the American Academy of Adoption & Assisted Reproductive Technology Attorneys since 2010 and is also a member of the Canadian Fertility and Andrology Society.

She is regularly asked to lecture on surrogacy and fertility law in Canada, and has served four times as the co-chair for Canada’s bi-annual national conference for Surrogacy and Fertility lawyers.

Ellen pioneered an approach to Parentage Declarations in the province of Alberta which allows intended parents to obtain Parentage Declarations from the Court within about 2 days of birth via surrogacy. She has provided expert evidence to other provinces and countries about the Alberta approach.

Ellen takes a highly personal approach in dealing with families. She understands that clients have often expended considerable time and resources trying to become pregnant before they turn to surrogacy, and delivers caring, cost-effective services to her clients both domestically and internationally.
