Simon leads the Financial Services Indirect Tax practice for KPMG Canada and is also a partner in KPMG Law. He has over 20 years of tax planning and policy experience with a focus on insurance, asset management and banking. Before joining KPMG, Simon headed the HST policy group at the Ontario Ministry of Finance where he helped implement the HST in Ontario. Simon also spent years practicing income tax with another leading law firm.
Simon advises some of the world’s largest insurers on product design, insurance premium taxes, sales taxes, and GST/HST/QST compliance. He is also one of Canada’s leading practitioners on the taxation of Fintech, crypto assets and the sharing economy. He also handles most of KPMG’s mergers and acquisitions and structuring work involving financial institutions.
Simon has worked with the Toronto Financial Services Alliance, the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the Canadian Life and Health Insurance Association and the Investment Funds Institute of Canada in considering the impact of the federal review of the GST/HST treatment of financial services, and in analyzing other issues such as self-assessment on reinsurance arrangements and remittance of QST on investment plans.
